Elyria Accepts Wilkes Villa Area For School Busing

The Elyria Board of Education approved part of the Wilkes Villa housing area on Fuller Road joining the district. About 400 students may be bused this fall to alleviate overcrowding while Midview keeps the rest. Foster Elliott said placement aims to keep students in their previous schools where possible.

President Nixon plans to press for peace in Vietnam as a top aim of his forthcoming trip to Red China. White House aides say the journey seeks a more peaceful world with Southeast Asia a foremost objective. Nixon will meet congressional leaders and cabinet members upon return from California.

Cleveland seeks federal aid to rehire city workers

Mayor Carl B. Stokes announced Cleveland seeks 14 million dollars in federal funds to rehire 1,449 of 1,750 laid off since January. If approved under the Emergency Employment Act, 193 police, 146 health workers, 637 waste staff, 386 recreation workers and 79 housing inspectors would be brought back. Stokes to meet with U S Labor Secretary Hodgson in Washington.

Nine youths killed in head-on I-75 crash in Michigan

A car carrying nine youths collided head-on with a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of Interstate 75 near Grand Blanc Michigan. The impact fused the autos into one wreck. The youths were not identified. The other driver was critically injured after forcing another car off the road earlier.

County Blossom night to benefit arts council

The Lorain County Arts Council hosts a benefit concert at Blossom Center on Sept. 3 sponsored by The Chronicle Telegram. The 4:30 p.m. program features the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Louis Lane with selections from My Fair Lady Sound of Music and Hair plus The State of Ohio a Joseph Levine piece. Talks Set Today in Rail Strike

Washington AP reports a selective UTU strike enters a second day with two railroads idled and talks planned. The walkout affects 48 000 workers on Southern and Union Pacific as unions press for pay and rule protections while railroads seek longer crew runs and new pay structures.
