Elyria three banks report assets rising from 63.0 million to 67.0 million as of June 30 1953. Deposits climb to 62.6 million while loans gain 0.76 million and time deposits reach 34.1 million. Capital accounts grow to 4.09 million and overall fivefold increase since 1949.
A woman refugee from East Germany said more than a hundred Allied soldiers are being held in a Soviet camp at Bautzen north of Dresden. The report was carried by the West German agency DPA and did not name the woman.
American frontline officers in Korea claim indisputable proof that Russian officers are advising Chinese units at the Kumsong bulge. They say Russians perform roles similar to American advisers to South Korean frontline units on the Allied side.
President Eisenhower seeks authority to send surplus U S foods to famine nations. Hearings begin in the Senate Agriculture Committee led by Chairman George D Aiken who says quick approval is likely though changes may be made while keeping the aid principle intact.

The Senate approved and sent to the White House a six month renewal of the 1950 excess profits tax expiring June 30. The bill, a core element of the administration’s budget program, would keep the tax in force until December 31. A proposed change to raise the corporate exemption to 100000 was defeated 34 to 52.
Former U S ambassador to Russia Admiral William Standley predicts Marshal Nikolai Bulganin may be next Soviet leader targeted in a purge. Standley, in Newsweek, notes Bulganin heads military forces but lacks Red Army prestige and would be nervous if in Bulganin position.

Medina County Sheriff said Bernice A Ferguson 57 held on the fatal clubbing of wife Florence May 50 near Spencer. A 29 page statement was signed. Preliminary hearing planned today as neighbors recall family disputes over Mrs Ferguson working.
Major Wayne H. Burdue died in a North Korean prison camp in July 1951 according to a War Department letter confirming a repatriated prisoner of war report. He was 39, served as chaplain in World War II, and is survived by his wife DeEtte and their son Jimmie, plus his foster mother Mildred Cope.
Mr and Mrs Russell J Lovell of Butternut Ridge Road learn their son Corporal Russell S Lovell was wounded in Korea about three weeks ago. A Defense Department telegram to his wife in Sugartown La confirms the injury. He writes of being wounded in the foot and hospital in Osan Japan. He is progressing well and was promoted to corporal six weeks ago. His father recalls joining the 37th Division at Camp Polk La in January and meeting Joy Jeng Smith of Sugartown whom he married before overseas service. His mother expects his return home in August.
Assistant Secretary of State Walter Robertson faced Senate questions after returning from talks with South Korea President Syngman Rhee. Senators press for a full report on what Robertson offered for a truce and what Rhee agreed to, amid limited official detail. The pair had issued a communique on collaboration, a possible defense pact, and political economic cooperation, while concerns linger over six month armistice limits and potential resumption of fighting.
Washington reports the United States Britain and France seek Moscow’s reply to Molotov about unifying Germany and an Austrian peace treaty. A four power parley late September or early October was proposed. Identical notes were sent to Moscow. Dulles and Robertson will address Europe Korea on radio TV Friday.
Lorain municipal court bound Pedro Leivas and Felix Santiago Rodriguez to the grand jury on murder charges for two separate weekend killings. Leivas is charged with first degree murder in the Juan Marquez stabbing near his 29th street home. Rodriguez is charged with shooting Manuel Pimentel at the Ber X Tavern on Vine Avenue. Leivas pleaded innocent at arraignment. Rodriguez was arrested shortly after the Ber X Tavern incident.
Dominic Rebman of Lorain filed suit against Lloyds of London for 7500 alleging due on an insurance policy on a filly named Briar Patch. He said the Kentucky bred filly, bought July 3 1951, cost 375 premium for one year. Briar Patch died February 27 1952 while training at Sunshine Park Florida.
Minister Georges Bidault, who joined the Big Three talks in Washington, left today for New York en route to Paris.
South Korean and American forces launched a surprise counter-offensive against about 80,000 Chinese along the central front near Kumhwa and the Pukhan River. Three South Korean divisions attacked, supported by American tanks and air power, gaining a mile before Chinese counterattacks and renewed shelling.
A Moscow led purge throughout Estonia and East Germany removes officials linked to Russia. Replacements include Ivan Ussenko and Max Fechner with Walter Raudsalu named in Estonia. Pravda cites military leaders condemning former Deputy Premier Beria and aligning with Malenkov in power struggles.

In Black River township Ohio the volunteer fire department faced a mass resignation of the chief and 23 members over a disputed pump purchase. After a three hour public meeting on Wednesday night tensions eased as resignations were withdrawn and trustees sought to cancel a 750 gallon pumper contract.
