Merna Livermore was elevated to associate superintendent for Curriculum and Instructional Services by the Elyria City School Board effective Nov. 16. She replaces Robert Herndon and will earn 36916 annually. She has taught in Elyria since 1961 and holds degrees from Baldwin Wallace and Kent State. Lawrence Houvouras was hired as Elyria High School band director for 1981-82 at 19346 plus 1680 contract. he has a master’s from North Texas and 10 years experience. A 67 year old North Olmsted man, Michael J. Lappis of 26496 Willet Drive, died Sunday afternoon of an apparent heart attack while swimming in Lake Exie off Lakeview Beach in Lorain. Police said he turned over and was pulled from the water.

Police blame speeding boater in Westlake drowning crash
A Cleveland Police Ports and Harbor Unit spokesman said one boat was speeding and another was going about 15 mph when a collision near Westlake led to Anita Smith 43 being thrown from a boat. Investigators will review Coast Guard tapes, interview witnesses, and likely present charges to the city prosecutor after further shore searches and a pending police report. Mr Smith condemned the other driver’s carelessness, noting there was no reason to travel so fast at night. The couple owned M&M Tool and Die and REDY Corp in Cleveland and leave four children aged 16 to 26.

Service walkout halts gas sales on Ohio Turnpike
Oasis Petroleum Co workers at the Ver Milion Valley service plaza walked off Sunday night causing gas sales to stop for about three hours. Allan Johnson of the Ohio Turnpike Commission said the disruption began around 7 p.m. and resumed at 10 p.m. after replacements were found. Johnson cited an assistant manager quitting and a labor dispute as possible causes. Ralph Tedrow of Oasis said the manager was dissatisfied with his job.
