Ohioan Tests Antibiotics On Shipping Fever In Cattle

Dr Nelson King of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station reports antibiotics sharply reduce shipping fever in cattle. Eight of 100 untreated cattle contract the disease before or after Wooster, while 6 of 100 calves given one Texas injection stay healthy. Two injections, one in Texas and one in Ohio, reduce cases to 2.5 percent. Causes remain uncertain, with a suspected virus and stress factors lowering resistance. Further studies on cause and control are planned, including vitamin A and mineral trials and feed injections for outlying farms.
