Ernie Smith and Emory Bronte flew the City of Oakland from Oakland to Hawaii and back aiming to be the first civilian round trip, to beat the 5 hours 49 minutes Army duration set by Maitland and Hegen, after a false start earlier in the day.
An Elyria Chronicle Telegram report notes T L Moise, treasurer of the Community Service Council, urges timely payments of Chest pledges to meet monthly needs of beneficiary institutions. He emphasizes regular contributions prevent monthly funding gaps and help organizations cover bills and payrolls.

Washington July 14 Senator Fess has been summoned to confer with President Coolidge at the summer White House in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Fess, resting in a New York state resort, expects to leave for the Black Hills within a few weeks. The conference is believed related to fan relief and other legislation for the winter session of Congress.
In Chillicothe on July 1 Prof. She trone the curator of the Ohio museum announced two rare copper effigies from the Seip mound 16 miles west of town were found with a crescent cap and two freshwater pearl beads. The figures measure 15 and 40 inches from fore legs to tail. A second burial yielded two large copper axes similar to those previously found.
Ridgeway Rogers and M V Howells, longtime residents of Rio, meet again after 74 years. Rogers marks his 17th birthday anniversary Sunday and Howells nears his 35th Wednesday. They studied together as youngsters and had not seen each other for 13 years.
At Cincinnati the Elks convened as new officers were installed by Grand Exalted Ruler Charles H Grakelow of Philadelphia. Frank Malley became exalted ruler as Florida Elks cheer Miami hosting the 1928 Grand Lodge reunion. The Grand Parade and drill band contest were held at Redland Field with four bands and 36 piece Appleton lodge band competing.
Cleveland July 14 Announcement of punishments for L G Griffing and H P Daugherty officers of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers was expected today. C B Lindquist secretary of the organization is suspended three years for lax administration. Suspension runs the length of Lingquist six-year term with no pay.
Commenting on the close of the State Convention in Elyria Mason T. Smith said the Patriarchs Militant and Grand Encampment of Ohio completed their work and returned home. He praised the officers and visitors as a clean cut group and noted the strong impression left on the public. Continued on Page 2.
Dr C C Kirk from the University of Arkansas becomes superintendent of the Orient asylum for feeble minded. Announcement comes from state welfare director John E Harper. Kirk is Ohio Medical College graduate with twenty years in mental health, including tenure at Toledo State Hospital.
The Central Business Men's Association in Lorain issued a formal invitation today for Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh to speak in Lorain on August 1 as part of a campaign for an airport. Earl W. Bell, the association president, announced the plan.
The Canton murder trial of Saranus A. Lengel, ex-chief of police, moved toward closure after the state rested at 1:20 p m following testimony by Peggy Cavanaugh and Laura Haredy. A vigorous cross examination revealed admissions favorable to Lengel and connected witnesses with the killer and the alleged crime at Mellett’s home.

Gibson praised progress after nine sessions of the technical commission and private talks among heads of delegations. The plenary session was scheduled at the British admiralty head Bridgeman’s request. Mercury soars to 94 and 96 degrees in Marion Ohio as heat records are set.
Indiana Governor Ed Jackson rejected D. C. Stephenson's claim that his gubernatorial campaign was financed by the former Ku Klux Klan leader now imprisoned in Michigan City. Jackson called the accusation blackmail and said Stephenson's $2,500 check was for a saddle horse and equipment unrelated to his 1920s candidacy.

Washington July 14 Lieut Lester Maitland and Lieut Albert Tenberger, famed Pacific airmen, will be met in Chicago and escorted by staff to Milwaukee Darton and Wasnaiariwon for tentative departure dates. The officers will leave the Pacific coast by train for California before boarding planes to Chicago for further routing.
