Balloonists Faced Fatal Storm Adventure
Washington July 13. Balloonists faced dangerous conditions as a thunderstorm shattered the ascent. Captain Heep and Lt. Paul Evert battled darkness and wind, shedding ballast to avoid crashing. A Goodyear V craft, flown by Ward T. Van Orman, dived near the ground, injuring Van Orman while co-pilot Wetter Morten died later. The balloon tangled with high tension lines, electricity arcing through the basket as the crew struggled to survive.
