Elyria High plans split campus near stadium proposal grows
Superintendent Lester Schultz backs moving most Elyria High to a site near Ely Stadium at 2000 West Ave to save land and speed construction. A second option would remodel the current site at Maddle Avenue and Vic Janowicz Drive with new gym and auditorium, totaling about 289 million dollars for a 220000 square foot complex. Schultz says the stadium plan enables design around education programs with room for parking and expansion while preserving the old Washington Building for central offices.

Proposals At A Glance For New District Campus Options
Proposals outline two site options for a new high school complex. One near Sixth Street and West Avenues envisions an 8.5 acre 3 story building plus remodeled gym and auditorium linked by a tunnel under West Avenue at an estimated 28.9 million dollars with a 1996 start. The Ely Stadium site near 2000 West Ave covers about 50 acres for a 26.9 million dollar single story structure with a 1995 start. Rigda argues the current site underbuilds students and notes land purchases could yield 8.5 acres, while Schultz says the south site preserves the old gym for community use and could aid downtown, though space and parking remain concerns and the stadium site sits five miles from the district’s northern border.

West Elyria plan adds gym auditorium and labs
Elyria West proposes a second gymnasium auditorium and science laboratories to complete the 1970s construction plan. The remodel would create about 1,200 student capacity, up from 800, and revamp about 75 percent of the school, with new walls in open classrooms. Principal Paul Rigda notes the project would finish years of waiting as the drama program currently uses under equipped spaces.
