Lorain board member settles defamation suit with district attorney
Lorain City School District board member Jim Smith reached a settlement with attorney Anthony Giardini to drop the defamation action. Both sides agree Smith did not commit criminal acts or breach duties and Giardini’s actions aimed to protect the district. Giardini will donate 1000 to the district endowment fund. The 2014 Admiral King Elementary closure stemmed from a natural gas leak from a well drilled in 1956. Emerald Environmental disputes the district’s blame. The district has ongoing legal actions related to public meetings law and a separate suit against fellow board members.

Petition flaws block county reform signature drive
The elections board rejected the reform petition to redraw county districts citing a flawed exhibit and misleading signatures. Officials analyzed 7,867 submitted signatures with 6,622 from registered voters and 1,245 invalid. Proponents have until August to gather more to reach the 7,782 required, but staff cautioned earlier signatures may not count depending on a ruling.
