Petition tiebreaker heads to state for Lorain County reform

The Lorain County Board of Elections split along party lines over petition problems for a county government reform plan. Republicans backed moving forward, Democrats urged keeping it off the November ballot. The tie will be broken by Secretary of State Jon Husted after briefs are filed.

Parks director accused of blocking petition drives at Lakeview Park

Lorain County attorney Gerald Phillips charged Metro Parks officials with stopping signature gathering for two ballot issues during a Sunday Concert under the Stars at Lakeview Park. Executive Director Jim Ziemnik denied bias, saying the prohibition on solicitation applies to all, including candidates and volunteers.

Lorain considers ordinance to limit plantings on tree lawns

Lorain City Council discussed a proposal to remove trees from tree lawns via a clarifying ordinance. The measure would ban shrubs and plants higher than 24 inches in the right of way but not address existing trees. Some officials supported the plan while others urged code enforcement focus and questioned a potential grandfather clause. The vote could occur next Monday at 6 p.m. at 200 W Erie Ave.

Ward 2 paving delayed after city council vetoes bids

Lorain community reports delays as Mayor Ritenauer vetoes an ordinance allowing the Safety Service Department to seek bids for the 2017 East Side Rehabilitation Program funded by Community Development Block Grant money. The plan targeted Kentucky Avenue from D Street to East Erie Avenue and D and E streets from Louisiana to Kansas, at a cost near 400000, noting these streets urgent but not previously included in major projects.

Amherst and township near deal on Golden Acres JEDD

Amherst City Council and Amherst Township are nearing a 100 year joint economic development district plan for the former Golden Acres Nursing Home site owned by Lorain County. The proposal would share income tax revenue and fund shared services while preserving possible growth boundaries.
