The Chronicle Telegram polled 744 readers on six firearm issues. A strong majority oppose registering firearms and handgun licenses, favor severe penalties for crimes with guns, and enforce existing laws. Only mail order sales bans drew a near split vote 361 to 34.
The proposal supports private handgun registration and bans mail order sales. It calls for permit to buy and own, severe penalties for crimes involving firearms, and stricter enforcement of existing laws noting no new legislation is needed.
Prague officials said Soviet forces would pull back additional troops from the country starting Saturday. The move follows a crisis in Moscow’s relation with Czechoslovakia’s liberal Communist regime after Warsaw Pact maneuvers triggered protests. The crisis began June 1 when troops entered to oversee reforms and intensified when many stayed after the games ended on June 9.
Akron union members of the Utility Workers of America rejected a contract with Ohio Edison by 915 to 164. The mediator scheduled a 10 a.m. meeting between UWA and Ohio Edison after the vote as talks continue under an old contract since July 1.

Lorain postal inspectors explored whether the fatal bomb mailed to Daniel Ronec originated in Cleveland. Ronec 23 opened a cylindrical package at his mother's Lorain home and died. The investigation centers on names Don and Tom Ronec and possible misreading of Cleveland directory listings.
