Charlotte Brooks Ex Librarian Dies in Elyria

Charlotte Brooks longtime Elyria resident and former head librarian at Elyria Library died yesterday in Elyria Memorial Hospital after a three day admission Born April 11 1886 she spent most of her life in Elyria aside from five years in India where she taught at the Union Mission School in Kodai She taught English at Elyria High School for two years and was active in the Western Heights Settlement House services Funeral set for Saturday at 3 pm in First Congregational Church with pastors Curtis and Morgan officiating. Surviving: brother Fred R Brooks sisters in law Mrs Leroy Spinks and Mrs Leroy Cummings.

Layoff Plan Called Off at Lorain Works

A layoff of 300 to 350 workers at Lorain Works, U S Steel Nation al Tube Division, will not occur by July 20. A company spokesman said late yesterday that improved orders make the cuts unnecessary for now. Funeral services for Harold were set for today with a memorial service at Ridge Hill Memorial Park and church involvement tomorrow. The family asked for contributions to a local cancer fund.

Budget Requests Near 3 1/2 Million Total for City

Budget requests total $1,389,892.50, higher than the 1959 city budget by about $77,000, with a final appropriation projection around $3,493,357.47 to be reviewed by the city council finance committee. The 1959-approximation covers general fund expenditures and departmental requests including City Council, Clerk, mayor, auditor, city treasurer, civil service, Municipal Court, recreation, police, fire, and water works. The general fund alone seeks over $1.3 million in expenditures, with income projected near one million dollars and a possible rate increase affecting sanitation and water accounts.

Airmen shot down last month face mob in Soviet Armenia
