Lorain County commissioners voted unanimously to urge the Ohio Turnpike Commission to proceed with the Route 58 interchange project now, even if it means dropping plans for a rail tie between Lorain and Wellington. They emphasize delaying the project risks local jobs and the regional economy.
Eva E. Fisher testified that she willingly had sex with Elyria Patrolman Todd Zack seven years ago when he was a corrections officer. She described meeting after calling from a prison desk, being instructed to perform in a guard bathroom, and later being questioned during an investigation. Fisher said Zack offered gifts and urged denial to investigators.
Richard Tennant Jr., 18, of Sheffield, was sentenced by Avon Lake Municipal Judge John M. Mackin to two years probation for threatening a school shooting at Brookside High School. He must undergo counseling and pay Sheffield police 5,000 for protective details during the last week of classes. The case followed a separate Oregon high school shooting incident that left two students dead.
Congress approved legislation to reform the IRS into a kinder tax collector with a nine member oversight board and powers to hire and fire the commissioner. It would allow up to 40 executives at salaries to 175,400, and include agency dismissal for cover ups. Clinton said he will sign the bill.
An Ohio appeals court revived a class action by former Cleveland Browns season-ticket holders against Art Modell, saying a lower court erred in dismissing the case. The suit accuses Modell and the team of misrepresentation breach of contract fraud and violations of consumer sales practices. NFL bids for a replacement Browns team in a 1999 Cleveland stadium are expected later this summer.
