Tina Brown resigns from The New Yorker to head a new Miramax Films venture. Police hunted an Oberlin escapee who threatened to rape a coed after fleeing Oberlin Police Department. Chronicle Telegram site reports update delay.
A Elyria police officer, Todd Zack, stands trial on 22 counts including rape, sexual battery and gross sexual imposition. Anita Bowen testified that Zack forced sex after strip searches and showed a prowling panther tattoo while assaulting her at the station. Bowen, 35, previously received a city settlement of 78,000 dollars.
Rafael Figueroa 19 of Middle Avenue appeared in Elyria Municipal Court on a preliminary hearing for aggravated murder in the death of Cordelia DePaolis 18. Acting Judge Christopher Rothgery set a 400000 bond and referred the case to a county grand jury. DePaolis body was found June 29 at the family home after a violent struggle. No evidence of sexual assault or intoxication. Figueroa is married to DePaolis' sister.
Fire stations No 2 and No 3 at 817 Lake Ave and Winckles and Clark streets in Elyria are being auctioned to the highest bidder. City officials favor selling to repurpose as a restaurant or boutique rather than demolish, with prospects already inquiring about the properties.
State Rep. Bill Taylor plans to press Ohio DOT about a dangerous three mile stretch of U S Route 20 between SR 58 and 511 after a Tuesday crash that killed Jerry G. Scott, 40, of Smithville. The curved, two lane section follows a four lane span and has already claimed two lives since early June.
Lorain City Council member Vinson Shipley proposes raising council pay from 7650 to 8650 dollars annually, plus full hospitalization benefits. He says other city workers receive cost of living increases, while council members have not been rewarded for more than a decade. Some colleagues caution timing amid tax-raising efforts, with one councillor preferring committee review.
