Bell inaugurates picture phone service nationwide debut
Bell System advances its costly two way color Picturephone as a business tool to cut travel and streamline meetings. The service began with a Washington to New York call and will reach 40 plus cities by next year with pricing including installation at $117 500 and monthly rentals over $10 000. Public room use for a one hour New York to Washington meeting runs about $1 340, with higher rates for multi city connections and lower rates for private rooms. Executives claim the system will reduce travel and costs while preserving personal contact, though residential access is not expected for several years. The rollout includes additional cities this year and broader expansion in 1983 to other major metro areas across the United States.
