In Queensborough England UPI reports a circus cannon misfired as Tom Pretty crawled into the barrel to inspect it. The trigger slipped sending him about 30 feet through the air, leaving him with a wrenched back and a mild electric shock. He blamed himself for not ensuring the explosive capsule was absent.
In Saint John New Brunswick salmon is scarce as the federal government orders commercial fishermen to skip salmon to prevent depletion. The salmon served on New Brunswick menus is mostly flown from British Columbia. Traditional pairing with fiddleheads remains, though salmon availability is limited.
A 20 percent boost approved by Congress will raise Lorain County monthly Social Security payments by 356900? an amount set to total 2 039 360 in October. There are 26786 recipients currently drawing 1 782 800 monthly with the Sept. 1 effective increase reflected in Oct. 3 checks.

A Japanese merchant vessel Ariake raced a Pacific typhoon to reach the crash site of a U S B52 bomber 300 miles west of Guam. Four crewmen were sighted in life rafts alive as two others remained missing while Air Force aircraft circled. The bomber carried 10 tons of bombs and sank after ejecting crew members. This marked a nonhostile loss in the Indochina war.
Elyria will share in a 668000 federal planning grant awarded to NOACA for area and local planning. Other recipients include Cleveland Cleveland Heights Euclid and Akron. The grant comes from HUD Comprehensive Planning Assistance, after NOACA applied with a unified work program.
Carl P. Sheaffer, Stanford University’s longest surviving heart transplant patient, died after admission for rehabilitation from injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was 37 and had the transplant 44 months ago. An autopsy will determine the death cause.
Elyria Telephone Co. crews on Lodi Street near Chestnut Street will continue trenching across the Furnace Street intersection next week, forcing closure of all right turns from Lodi onto Furnace and blocking part of the Lodi Street bridge approach.
U S Navy jets hit a transhipment point east of Hai Phong as 3 F4 Phantoms were shot down with six crewmen missing. MIG21 interceptors claimed two more Phantoms while a third was lost to unknown causes. The battle stretched across North and South Vietnam with heavy anti infantry actions near Hue and Quang Tri.
Ghassan Kanafani, 36, spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and a noted Arab novelist, died when a booby trapped sportscar exploded as he started the ignition. His niece Lamiss also died. blast damaged nearby buildings.
DeRoy Gorham, the first Black assistant principal at Franklin Junior High in Elyria, resigned after two weeks in a post approved by the Board of Education. Gorham, who had left Lorain Board of Education to take a $14,500 Elyria position, informed Don Swartz that he would not fulfill his contract and plans to return to Lorain Schools. The Elyria board faces a deadline for teachers to resign as it seeks a replacement.
About 50 youths swam naked at Flamingo Park pool near midnight as Miami Beach prepares for the Democratic National Convention. Senior citizens wandered in unruffled and chatted with revelers while a Hare Krishna devotee performed and protesters gathered. The park buzzed with carnival atmosphere as tensions between counterculture and locals ran low.
The Ohio delegation to the Democratic national convention will be featured in a European television documentary produced by the European Educational Network. Klaas Hendriks will head the crew as they follow delegates through the convention to show how a candidate is nominated and how issues affect individuals.
President Nixon instructed FAA to ensure 100 percent passenger screening on some commuter flights after a wave of hijackings tied to Pacific Southwest Airlines. Ehrlichman said new rules require two forms of identification and possible body searches, with emphasis on metal detectors.
