The July 4 1969 flood left Elyria with flooded basements downed trees and a halted Cascade Park fireworks display. Police evacuated 1500 to 1800 people from the park as storms swept across northern Ohio. Rescue efforts continued through July 6 with guardsmen, Civil Defense and volunteers aiding stranded residents while Vergin Vermilion Lake, Norwalk reservoirs and Lake Erie boats faced heavy damage and casualties. Gracie Sophie and Grandma the bears survived in Cascade Park as officials monitored and rebuilt after the disaster.
