City hikes water rates 5 percent for Elyria residents

Elyria City Council voted 10 to 1 to raise water and sewer rates by more than five percent effective Sept 1. The average user consuming 800 cubic feet monthly will see a bill rise from 48.01 to 50.62 dollars. The city plans a 1.5 million dollar study to improve the water system, possibly adding a new southeast water tower. Local residents with low pressure, like Amy Lett on Songbird Lane, oppose higher charges.

Griffey tops Thome in All-Star Derby finals

Ken Griffey Jr. edged Jim Thome in the All-Star Game home run derby at Coors Stadium in Denver after Griffin joined late following fan boos. Thome matched Griffey shot for shot in the semi finals before falling by a single homer in the final round.

Wakeman Couple Win Half of 12 Million Super Lotto

Gilbert and Eloise Cammarn of Wakeman won half of a 12 million dollar Super Lotto prize drawn Saturday. They will receive 158076 dollars annually for 26 years after taxes. The winning numbers 1 34 14 16 31 were picked by Gilbert, who buys the tickets weekly and found the prize while reading the paper at The Crossroads Tavern.

Tax poll favors temporary income levy in Elyria

On July 4 residents polled at Cascade Park supported keeping the 0.5 percent income tax temporary by 52.4 to 47.6 percent. City Council voted unanimously to place a five year tax on the November ballot, expiring July 1, 1999 and raising about 4.8 million dollars for city services. A voter earning $80,000 would pay about 150 dollars annually.

One Dead in Route 20 Collision Near Wellington

One person died and three were injured in a two vehicle crash on U S Route 20 one mile east of Route 58 Wellington A fuel hauling truck owned by British Petroleum Co Ltd and an Audi were involved in the collision the Audi traveled west while the fuel truck went east according to a deputy coroner.

Lorain teen, father charged in bank grab in Amherst

Amherst police say a 13 year old boy snatched a restaurant deposit from a worker just before 10 am outside Farmers Bay Restaurant. He fled in a pickup driven by his father Peter Ayala 34 of Lorain who faces robbery and related charges. Two other boys aged 13 and 14 were charged in juvenile court with robbery.
