Avon Commons zoning fate to be decided by voters
Developer Mitchell Schneider announced plans to file an initiative petition to place Avon Commons on the ballot after withdrawing a city rezoning request. He seeks to rezone 84 acres south of Detroit Road and east of Center Road from C-2 to C-3 for a 600,000 square foot shopping center. The Planning Commission had approved the change 3-1 on June 29, but council members doubt passage. If petitions gather signatures from at least 605 registered voters and verify, the issue will appear on the ballot. Voters previously rejected a charter amendment requiring voter approval for many commercial developments.
