The Board of Education approved a tentative 1937 budget estimating expenditures at 526 664 and income at 528 400 for school purposes. Expenditures would be 1 635 above 1936 estimates, with 1937 income 3 higher than last year. Major items include 325 000 teachers payroll and 43 000 janitors payroll.
The Elyria Board of Education approved the employment of five new teachers to fill summer resignations. Superintendent Maston said more hires may follow to cover remaining vacancies across elementary, junior high, and high schools. He noted overcrowded high school classes exceed the 40-student limit in places and may require fixes.
Generally fair conditions prevail in Ohio with tonight and Wednesday noting slightly warmer temperatures. East and Central portions are expected to be a bit warmer on Wednesday while the rest remain mild and dry.
The Building and Lands Committee of Citys Council favors a plan to repair Central Fire Station No 4 and possibly move water works and police to the first floor of City Hall. It proposes office changes on both floors and the front. If costs are not excessive, bonds may be issued for payment. Estimated total is 15 000 to 20 000. Committee members are William G. Smith Frank Henke and Henry C. Sass manhausen.
Thirty-three Elyria boys aged up to 14 start a ten day stay at the Elyria Y M C A Camp Iss See Kes on Vermilion River. The third camp group of the season and second sponsored by the local Y will remain until July 16. Carl Wagner is camp director with Mr and Mrs KK Kenawell handling meals. The Lorain County jury commission started interviewing about 150 prospective jurors to weed out those unable or unqualified, aiming to streamline future jury selection. Some interviewees were excused. interviews expected to continue tomorrow and Thursday. Jury commissioners are Bart A. Tickason and Viola Peters.
Elyria school officials and board members discussed undercount concerns at last night’s meeting. The census reported 4392 children ages five to eight, 138 below last year’s 5000. Superintendent Maston said actual enrollment exceeds the tally, even after excluding outside tuition students.
Lorain County real estate activity increased with a favorable mortgage picture in the annual report by County Recorder William G. Mitchell covering the year ending July 1. Mortgages canceled exceeded filings by $822,234.80 despite more mortgages filed than canceled. Deeds recorded totaled 2,383, up 402 from the prior year, with mortgage filings at 1,471 and cancellations at 1,461. total mortgage filings reached $3,882,480.13 while canceled amounts were $4,664,826.93. The prior year saw 2,062 filings for $7,881,388.85 and 2,020 cancellations totaling $5,136,833.11, marking a rise in mortgage activity for 1944-45. Home Owners’ Loan Corporation activity is cited as a major factor. Two-thirds of deeds were agricultural, with 433 deeds transferring 18,270 acres. agricultural land deeds showing 4,998 acres purchased for $324,741.90 at an average of $64.97 per acre. City announces Lake Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Griswold Road to Elyria Avenue for up to two weeks due to the construction of a new 30 inch Force Main. Elyria Avenue is closed from Lake Avenue to North Ridge Road with official detours via West River Street and North Ridge Road. An alternate route via Griswold Road and Murray Ridge is also advised.

School officials study extensive repairs and replacements for Flytia schools. Board informal approval to create a built in refrigeration room for the high school cafeteria. Estimated cost includes refrigerator and labor around 500 dollars. WPA funds may cover labor. Existing stove and oven nearing end of usefulness. more equipment needs may follow when funds allow.
The Elyria Board of Education officialy approved full 577,781 PWA grant funding for the Jefferson Junior High School addition. State PWA officials amended tentative equipment contracts and will confer with the national office before final equipment approvals. Construction is advancing with concrete poured and lower-floor partitions starting. project completion eyed soon with potential extra 40 percent grant draw as work nears half done.
Elyria will add hundreds of textbooks to the free list at the start of the next school year in September following action by the Elyria Board of Education. Net cost to the board is about 3500 dollars, with books total around 5900 dollars and anticipated allowances on books in the board’s possession around 1509 dollars. New books will be bought with older books exchanged. The move is to comply with a state law requiring boards to furnish books within four years, a deadline now two years away. In Columbus on July 7 the Ohio Workers' Alliance set the Senate Chamber as its headquarters and vowed an extended stay to press relief demands. Delegates from Cleveland Toledo Cincinnati and Dayton promised reinforcements and warned of resistance if evicted. They seek $20 million to cover needs for the rest of the year and reject a narrow relief plan.
County commissioners approved the new two room school building at Pleasant View Sanatorium. The stone structure includes automatic heat control and air conditioning with ample natural light and a basement play room. Erected as a WPA project, the school will be run by the Amherst Board of Education next year to qualify for state funds. the sanatorium superintendent emphasized the importance of TB child education.
