NEA Rejects Merger With AFT 58 42 Vote in New Orleans
In New Orleans the National Education Association rejected a merger with the American Federation of Teachers by 5,624 to 4,091. The plan would have created a 3.3 million member union and a single voice in politics, but was blocked by the two-thirds constitutional requirement. Leaders blamed the vote on issues over unity and identity while opponents warned of loss of grassroots strength. AFT plans a separate merger vote set for July 18 in New Orleans.
