Washington AP Assad seeks release of seven additional American captives in Lebanon with Syrian influence cited as key after the TWA 847 hostages were freed. State Department OKs no specifics, noting Assad’s leverage with Lebanese authorities and Shiite groups.
Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Cirigliano will hear whether to move the trial of former Sheffield Middle School teacher Donald Marshall from Lorain County. Marshall, 46, is charged with corruption of a minor and gross sexual imposition for alleged 1979 80 school year incidents with two male students.
The eighth annual C T Distance Classic 10 k will be Sunday August 4 at 6 p m at Lorain County Community College with prizes and 87 plaques. First 350 entrants get a free T shirt and cash drawings. Entry fees are 5 pre race and 6 day of race. Nine age divisions, top finishers receive plaques. A 1 mile fun run starts at 5 p m for beginners. Deadline for mail entries is Friday August 2.
Wellington residents report three power outages in a month caused by wildlife on poles. Officials cite summer and fall as peak damage times with birds and a squirrel triggering outages that can affect up to 400 homes. An Oberlin official recalls $80,000 in damages from a bird incident, including burned regulators.
Arnold R. Pinkney, campaign manager for Jesse Jackson, given one year probation for unlawful interest in a public contract. He must repay up to $1,000 to the Port Authority and donate 60 hours of service, with a 30 day stay pending appeal. Pinkney asserts innocence and vows to continue public life.
