Lorain reports its first rabies victim in three decades after a resident was bitten by a rabid bat on June 27. The bat’s rabid status confirmed by Ohio health officials led to anti rabies treatment and updated vaccine protocols. Public health officials urge immediate hospital care after bites and quarantine for suspected dogs and cats.
A late Monday storm knocked out power by damaging fuses transformers and lines feeding homes in Grafton LaGrange Sheffield Vermilion Columbia Station and western Cuyahoga County. Trees and power lines were downed across the region severing service to numerous residents and prompting utility crews to work into the evening.
A grease chunk half as big as a body clogged a Grafton sewer during heavy rains, backing up water to three feet in basements and damaging property. Residents claim pumps were denied by village officials as they plan to plead the issue before the village council.
Las Vegas bandleader Harry James dies at 67 in Valley Hospital after a long battle with lymph gland and lung cancer. The famed trumpeter, once hailed as the world's greatest, performed with his band through illness and had recent shows in Denver and Los Angeles. James, a Las Vegas resident, was once married to Betty Grable, with whom he had two daughters before their divorce.
A 17 year old Amherst girl Cynthia Schuler was critically injured in a two car crash on Route 58 near Kresge Drive while en route to a fireworks show. She is in intensive care at Lorain Community Hospital with a broken neck and head injuries.
