The Elyria Board of Education announced a proposed total budget of 550 221 for this year, slightly below last year’s 350 355 operation cost. The plan keeps expenditures steady with no building fund increase and covers payrolls, summer programs, and a new administration hire.
A third oil strike in the Diagonal Road district within six months was reported at the Daly farm seven miles southwest of Elyria. The well, drilled Friday night, yielded oil and gas, following earlier successful wells on the W. W. Rockwood farm and an adjacent site. Kane and Peebles promoted the earlier wells while the Daly hole was drilled by the Ohio Fuel Gas Co.
County Treasurer Walter J. Wright said outside collection agencies opened today for the semi annual real estate tax collection. An advance total of about 240 000 has been collected and overall receipts may reach 1 100 000. Agencies operate through July 26 with office collection continuing into August. Locations include Wellington Kipton Oberlin LaGrange Grafton Amherst and Lorain.
Increasing cloudiness followed by local showers and thinner storms in Ohio and northwest tonight and Thursday. Slightly warmer in the northwest and central regions. A disturbance centers over eastern South Dakota and eastern Nebraska extending into western Texas with showers across the Ohio Valley and Lake Region.
Elyrians will attend the Congregational rally in connection with the Ohio Christian Endeavor convention at Cleveland Public Hall. The rally runs Friday from 2 to 4 PM. Those needing transportation should contact Dr. Kemp or Harold Olmstead.
Two ordinances passed on first reading authorize borrowing 3000 dollars from the sinking fund for two years at 3 percent to fund city WPA work. Projects include storm sewer completion on Prospect street and relaying bricks on Middle avenue and along Park avenue. An ordinance also approves buying a power weed mower for up to 1000 dollars.
Dr. Frank W. Barrett a 78 year old retired Methodist minister and author died in a New London hospital at 7 A M after an operation delay. Funeral services set for 2 30 P M Friday at Fitch funeral home with Rev. W H Mitchell and Rev H H Patrick officiating. Burial in Butterfield cemetery. Survived by two sisters physicians Dr Onie Barret and Dr Betty Barrett both of Daytona Beach.
Washington July 5 The Senate foreign relations committee again postponed consideration of the administration neutrality program despite President Roosevelt's insistence on action before adjournment.
Superintendent R C Maston outlined four proposed building programs for Elyria schools including new Hamilton and McKinley elementary units, a east side junior high, a large high school auditorium, an industrial plant, and additions to Edison Allen Roosevelt and Gafford units. Estimated cost 750000 to 1000000 dollars, pending sites and sizes, with federal aid and bond issues needed.
A gasoline trailer truck collided with a car on Route 42 two miles northwest of Mt Gilead. James Bidwell 29 relief driver for Trails Transport Co of Columbus died from burns Wayne Truett 30 regular driver burned seriously hospitalized. Truck en route from Akron to Columbus carried 6500 gallons gasoline gasoline spilled into the lake owned by C S Hammond. Trees singed guard rail burned and Union Power Co wires snapped. Names in the car not learned immediately.
A four day Fourth of July period saw more than 600 people killed in violent incidents across the United States with 633 deaths reported. Auto accidents led with 281 deaths, 158 drownings and 194 from falls, fires, homicides and wrecks. California Germany
Washington July 5 Work Projects Commissioner F C Harrington ordered WPA rolls cut from an average of 2 6 million in June to 2 4 million by the end of July under a new 1 7396 million relief program The July quotas aim to bring relief rolls down to an average of 2 047 000 for the fiscal year ending June 30 1940 Rolls during 1939 averaged about 2 9 million under 2 250 000 000 in total relief The July quotas call for 2 266 845 persons on straight WPA State programs over 33 000 in Federal white collar agencies and about 100 000 in scattered Federal agencies paid from WPA funds The cuts followed a four day shutdown while adjustments were made to the new relief setup.
Massillon State Champion Drum and Bugle Corps won the competition drills at Wellsville homecoming under the American Legion. Rochester Pa in second Alliance Ohio third and Cleveland Heights Ohio fourth. Prizes totaling 500 dollars were awarded.
Service Director I D Faxon warned council that a new state firemen’s bill will reduce city fireman manpower by 2 12 men by September. The change requires one extra day off every two weeks in addition to existing two weeks paid vacation, risking lower fire ratings and higher insurance costs. Firemen currently work 24 hours on and 24 hours off with on call days during off periods.
Luther Kuntz of East 31st Street in Lorain, a longtime figure in the local steel industry, died yesterday after a lingering illness. He joined Johnson Steel Co. and stayed through its evolution into The National Tube Co. He was retired on pension.
In Cagliari Sardinia a military hydroplane crashed last night killing all five crew members aboard. The inquiry into the accident is underway with authorities assessing the cause and securing the site.
The extended Fourth of July holiday in Ohio saw 41 violent deaths from traffic accidents, drownings, and other causes. Five Ohioans died out of state. Fireworks injuries were around 50 but mostly minor. no fireworks fatalities were reported.
A sedan carrying nine people ran a stop sign at Route 19 and 40 and hit a bus, then toppled into a 10-foot bank and a house. Six died and three were injured. victims include Fred Wendt and his family from Wellsburg and Albert Bailey of Follansbee. The bus was driven by Doc Watson of Hagerstown.
A tornado last night cut a two mile path through Concord Township near Urbana Ohio damaging the D H Showers farm home. The Showers family rushed to the cellar and ran to the struck silo buildings seeking shelter.
Mrs. Gustav Schlageter of Norwalk died in a traffic accident near Lake Mills Wisconsin when a tire blew out on a car driven by her daughter Gertrude Brown of Pewaukee. Brown and others were injured and hospitalized. The deceased had many Elyria friends from visits to her son at 211 Denison Avenue.
Dr. Oscar Jaszi, bylined as a professor and author on international affairs, told the University of Virginia Institute of Public Affairs that Nazi expansion seeks a new global distribution of lands rather than genuine peace. He warned that Nazidom is driven by power, not minority self determination, and outlined three European pathways to halt aggression.
Five persons were treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday for fireworks injuries as the Independence Day celebration ended with no serious accidents. Richard Everhart 26 of 512 Woodland avenue burned left hand. Madeline Diederich 4 of Cleveland road burned left hand. Richard Heath 10 of 1710 Middle avenue burned right hand. Ellsworth Adams 15 of 233 Spruce street treated for similar injuries. Richard Decker 8 of 357 Oxford avenue laceration over left eye from a firecracker. Wilbur Sullivan 26 of 1326 Lakewood avenue treated for left ankle injury from baseball at Cascade Park. Dennis Stoffer 7 of 244 Boston suffered minor injuries in a traffic accident at LaPorte airport.
Fred Stone, 37, of 228 Bath Street, sustained a fractured left leg in a traffic crash on Route 82 at Durkee Road at 6 45 AM. Three other men received minor injuries. The report identifies Smith 2 of 378 X driving south.
A cloudburst on July 5 floods Trip Lett creek in Rowan County Morehead Clearfield and Farmers leaving 38 drowned with the death toll feared to rise. Volunteers used small boats to rescue residents as water swept away between 50 and 100 houses.
Lorain County last month showed a gain of over 100 percent in new auto and truck sales compared with a year ago. The clerk of court's department reported 235 new cars and 20 new trucks sold, versus 99 cars and 15 trucks a year earlier. May had higher totals with 252 cars and 23 trucks. Elyria dealers moved 97 new units out of 285 countywide.
Report shows Cascade Park drew a large crowd for the Fourth of July with hundreds arriving on foot and 1527 cars passing through the park. Visitors came from 41 states, illustrating broad regional turnout.
