Archives to Remove Declaration of Independence Display
National Archives will close early on July Fourth, lowering the Declaration of Independence the Constitution and the Bill of Rights into a vault for about two years of study and restoration. The four pages of the Constitution will be fully on view upon return with new angled cases and argon-filled enclosures. A computer program will let visitors sign a copy of the Declaration, while two murals by Barry Faulkner are renovated in the rotunda.

Mount Vernon acquires Washington whiskey letter
Mount Vernon added a rare October 1799 letter from George Washington describing his whiskey business to its collection. The missive, written to Col. William A. Washington, notes 200 gallons of whiskey ready and seeks grain for the distillery. Archaeologists pursue the distillery site as a $12 million grant from the liquor industry supports its reconstruction.
