Warner sells Atari unit to Commodore chief Tramiel
Warner Communications Inc. sold the main parts of its Atari consumer electronics unit to a company led by Jack Tramiel, former head of Commodore International. The sale triggers a projected $425 million second quarter loss for Warner, which kept the coin operated games unit and other assets. Tramiel and associates invested $75 million in the new company, which obtained warrants to buy Warner shares, while Warner gained warrants and $240 million in Tramil’s group debts. Atari, once a high profit center, faltered due to inventory build up and declining demand after a peak in the early 1980s.
