Mail Pouch painter Warrick keeps aging signs alive
Warrick, a longtime Mail Pouch painter based in Wheeling West Virginia, continues the classic tobacco sign art across four states. He paints 150 to 200 signs yearly, sets his own fees, and revisits sites for touchups every two to three years. The 1965 Highway Beautification Act curbed such ads, but Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia still permit closer placements. Warrick began after a chance barn painting in his family’s farm, and his son Roger may follow, ensuring the tradition endures.
