Gunman kills one, wounds three in New York Central Park

In Central Park near 85th Street and Fifth Avenue a gunman killed a woman and wounded three others, including two patrolmen. The shooter, armed with a .45 revolver, killed himself after exchanges with police who fired back. Tear gas flushed him from trees near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jacqueline Kennedy was reported to be in the area but away with her children.

Bond posted in abortion case in Lorain court

Edward Koester, 26, posted a 5000 dollar bond for the attempted abortion death case in Lorain Municipal Court. Joseph Turza, 28, plans to post bond. both pleaded innocent. Preliminary hearing set for 10:45 am July 11. The charge stems from the death of Gayle Ann Keiffer in Sheffield Lake.

Big Three seek ruling on Berlin access restriction

The United States Britain and France pressed the Soviet Union to overrule East Germanys new limits on access to West Berlin. Brezhnev argued East Germany has a right to protect its territory. The ambassadors delivered protest notes and pledged to meet international obligations to assure freedom of access, with no retaliation hinted.

Plane hijacker named as exile

The pisto waving hijacker who forced a Northwest Airlines plane with 86 passengers to Havana was identified as a Cuban exile. The Miami office said the hijacker was Mario Velazquez, but an FBI check had not confirmed which of several Cuban exiles named Velazquez was involved.

Pilot denies Soviet air space violation in Viet Nam troop flight

The U S airliner carrying 214 Viet Nam bound troops was intercepted by Soviet MIGs near the Kurile Islands and forced to land on Iturup. Captain Joseph Tosolini of Bethany Conn says the plane did not stray into Soviet air space and signed letters only under pressure for release. Navigator Larry Guernon says radar data shows a navigational error but the jet may have been off course by up to 100 miles. State Department apologized as the Soviets released the plane swiftly.
