Britain orders Ray extradited to United States

A British court ruled James Earl Ray, 40, extraditable to the United States for the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ray, an escaped Missouri inmate, was arrested in London and faces extradition after a two part hearing. The judge rejected claims the crime was political and cited Missouri robbery with violence. Ray showed nervousness in court and may appeal. extradition proceedings will continue.

Cuban jet liner hijack ends with return to United States

Cuban officials sent the hijacked Northwest Orient Boeing 727 back to the United States claiming it would be unsafe to take off fully loaded from Havana. The 87 passengers were to be picked up later by a U S refugee airlift at Varadero after the jetliner left Havana at 5 53 a m EDT.

Weather outlook with cooler temps and clearing skies

Cooler today with partly sunny skies and a high in the 70s. Tonight will be fair and cool with a low in the 50s. Wednesday should bring considerable sunshine and little temperature change. Two men plead innocent in Sheffield Lake abortion death

Lorain defendants Joseph D. Turza and Daniel Koester pleaded not guilty in Lorain Municipal Court to attempted abortion causing death in the Sheffield Lake case. Bond set at 2500 each. both held without bond. Victim Gayle Ann Keiffer, 28, died from an embolism after an alleged attempted abortion. Evidence included gloves and isopropyl alcohol near the body. case handled by Assistant County Prosecutor Joseph Grunda.

Eight year old's letter brings ice cream truck to doorstep

In Wellington eight year old Crang Watson printed a letter to Mayor Robert L Young asking for ice cream truck service on Cemetery Road. The mayor arranged with the driver to add Cemetery Road to the route, so the ice cream ding will greet the Watson home at Route St near Cemetery Road.

Arrest Warrant Issued in Elyria Robbery Case

A man linked to an Elyria armed robbery and subsequent traffic death was questioned in Dayton Sunday night and escaped. Police say a car stolen in Elyria was found in a Dayton parking lot and the suspect used the alias Marvin Gibson. Wallace Brown, 19, of Youngstown, is jailed on auto theft and armed robbery charges with bonds set at 5000 and 3000 respectively.

Court to rule on lawful head of county OEO

The county seeks a court ruling to determine the lawful head of the OEO after an election on May 15. Paul Sweda, ex mayor of North Oneville, was named president, while E. Glen Paiter Elyria High School teacher was unseated. The election was deemed invalid for lack of written notice to members.

Soviets to release U.S. airliner after Kursile seizure

The White House said the Soviet Union agreed to release a Vietnam bound American plane and its 17 crew members, held after M16 jets forced it to land on a Kurile Island. The flight was en route from the United States to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, with U.S. servicemen aboard.
