Vermilion museum spotlights Great Lakes shipping relics
Wakefield Museum of the Great Lakes Historical Society in Vermilion displays artifacts from the inland seas including a Niagara ship rib recovered after 140 years, a 1818 bill of lading, a brass signal gun, gyroscope compass, lantern from Paris 1895, and a log book from the brig Columbia. Clarence S. Metcalf, founder and curator, leads the exhibit and dreams a Vermilion room and an Inter-Lakes Yachting Association space while lamenting the lack of ship portraits from Vermilion's early fleet.
