Indicted rapist tied to 1998 Barberton murder case

AKRON based prosecutors indict Earl Mann 34 in the 1998 strangulation of Judith Johnson 58 and the rape and beating of her 6-year-old granddaughter, a case previously blamed on Clarence Elkins who was later exonerated after DNA testing prompted a $1 million wrongful incarceration settlement. The grand jury cites new DNA evidence from a cigarette butt Mann discarded at Mansfield prison. Elkins, who had been imprisoned for killing Johnson, voiced his surprise at the indictment timing and supports the death penalty for Mann if conviction.
