Tax Collection Offices Open for Summer Period

The summer tax collection begins with eight outside offices now open across the county. County Treasurer N. D. Backus says tax bills have been mailed to anyone on the mailing list. Others without bills should call or visit their district collection office. Offices opened today in Oberlin Amherst Lorain Kipton Wellington and Grafton.

Ohio Weather Forecast Shows Clouds and Thunderstorms

Mostly cloudy conditions expected with possible thunderstorms tonight and Sunday, cooler in northern areas. Daily highs reached 104 in Phoenix and 102 in Merth Platte and Lewis. Yellowstone Park and Modena show lows around 40 to 43. Forecast notes continued warm trend with scattered showers and variable winds.

Widow of gangster Legs Diamond slain in Brooklyn

Mrs. Alice Kenny Diamond, widow of Legs Diamond, was shot in her Brooklyn apartment. Detectives believe she was killed by two of Diamonds’ former cronies for knowing too much about Legs’ criminal dealings and for talking about them in speakeasies. Three coffee cups on the kitchen table were found with no other clues.

Kidnapers Seize John Factor Known as Jake the Barber

Chicago reports confirm the kidnapping of John Factor alias Jake the Barber, a famed stock broker and swindler, as he and his family left a North Shore nightclub. City Fire Loss Drops 18.1 Percent in First Half 1933

Fire Chief W N Bates reports the city’s fire loss for the first six months of 1933 fell 18.1 percent from the same period last year, totaling 5987.80 compared with 7310.90. Alarms dropped from 82 to 76 year over year, a June record of 28 fires and a loss of 102.35 versus 25.47 for the same month last year, as the department steps up prevention efforts.

Stop Gap Tax Program Is Rushed Through Ohio House

A $3,000,000 stop gap taxation plan to aid the unemployed and schools was nearing final passage by the Ohio legislature and would be sent to Governor White for approval. The House rushed through tax bills including a one cent sales tax on fuels, cosmetics levy, vending machine taxes, amusement taxes, a two cent beer tax, and a re enacted cigaret tax. Revenue would support poor relief and schools as sine die adjournment looms for the 90th assembly.

Reopening Plea Drives Lorain County Bank Waivers

Conservator Jas A Hewitt urged depositors to sign waivers at once to allow the bank to obtain a license and reopen. Three weeks of effort nearing the goal, but a few large depositors delaying waivers could derail the plan, which would give Elyria access to a commercial and savings bank and allow 60 percent of deposits for daily needs with 40 percent protected.

Four-H Clubs Withdraw From Wellington and Elyria Fairs

The Lorain county Four-H Clubs, about 700 youths, will not exhibit at the Wellington or Elyria fairs this year due to lack of premium guarantees and transport and entry fee costs. Chicago July 1 Lee Turner 34 of East St Louis Ill, a former convict and once sought as a Lindbergh kidnapping suspect, was held for Federal authorities. Police believed Turner’s arrest related to new Lindbergh case development, but federal officials said he faced only a Dyer Act violation charge.

Fliers Set Out From Dayton in Arctic Search for Mattern

Four monoplanes left Dayton at 11 AM bound for Chicago and Duluth en route to Nome Alaska to search systematically for missing world flyer Jimmy Mattern. Relief Funds Ordered Cut In Ohio Statewide

Ohio Relief Commission cut July relief budgets and 15 days of aid due to improved employment. About 17,600 families will be affected by a seven percent reduction as counties and cities receive funds only for the first 15 days, pending federal funds and state revenue actions. Italian air squadron lands off Amsterdam in deadly crash

On July 1 Italos Balbo led a 24 plane Italian air squadron along the Dutch coast. The lead plane touched water at 1 p m after a dramatic crash sequence. A Dutch naval sloop rushed to the wreck and two sailors dived into the plane to aid survivors. One commander suffered injuries and another crewman was missing. Heroic efforts by the Dutch navy were said to have averted greater loss of life.
