Lorain weighs Whittier plans with district enrollment up for vote

DeNicola said final plans for Whittier are not set including Lowell Elementary demolition. The board must approve a tentative agreement to start the project while Ohio Schools Facilities Commission decides how many district schools are needed. Enrollment has fallen by about 3000 in four years as the commission funds about 81 percent of construction with the rest from a 2001 Lorain bond. A Hawthorne site elementary would serve central Lorain near Washington Elementary. The board also approved six more classrooms and an additional boiler room at Gen Johnnie Wilson Middle School.
