Howard Gollmar president of the Elyria YWCA board announced plans for a new activities building to be erected this year with Ketchum and Company managing the campaign. The campaign will begin the last week of April and run into May. Dr. John Knight of Baldwin Wallace College spoke on Challenges of These Times, outlining five problems and their implications for democracy and society.

Fire kills twenty aged patients at McClary Convalescent Home
In Hoquiam Washington twenty elderly welfare patients died as a fast moving fire swept through the rambling wooden convalescent home. Thirteen bodies were found with ten perishing in beds and several dying while seeking escape. Firefighters arrived too late and the owner blamed a furnace or trash burner as the likely cause.

Judge Thomson Sets Allowances For Attorney Fees
Probate Judge Malcolm Thomson today set attorney fee standards for probate work in his court. Fees for ordinary legal services were set at five percent of appraised personal property. Lorain Man Sentenced for Grand Larceny in Restaurant Theft
Ellsworth W. Jones of Lorain was sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary by Judge D. A. Cook after pleading guilty to grand larceny. He allegedly stole about $1,500 in cash and checks from the William Heisman Restaurant safe on January 4 during business hours. Police reported that a portion of the money was recovered.

Bridge collapse in Quebec leaves several dead
A 2300 foot bridge at Three Rivers Quebec fell into the St Maurice river just before 3 am EST sending four autos into the icy water. Police said several people were killed with at least one body recovered early morning. Four survivors were treated for shock and escaped by ice to shore. The Duplessis bridge cost about 5 million dollars and had been repaired after cracking issues.
