Authority president Nielsen says no error by authority

Lorain jeweler contends there is no error on the part of the authority. He states the money is in escrow and will be submitted if Nielsen indicated.

Elyria homeowner plans suit to halt Abbe Road widening

John Sabo of 111 Alexander Dr plans to seek an injunction over North Abbe Road widening until sewer backup problems are addressed. He cites six inches of raw sewage after heavy rains in his basement and similar complaints from Falcon Fairwood Abbe Knolls and Briar Lake residents east of the road. He says city action has stalled and plans to contact an attorney and organize a residents meeting. James Anton plans to bring the issue to the Monday council meeting and says relief actions may have been taken on Salem Avenue and Livermore Lane.

Vermilion braces for flood as ice jams risk release

Vermilion faces imminent flooding as ice jams on the Vermilion River threaten to break free. A dynamite blast was attempted to clear a half mile jam near the lagoon while Major John Maiden seeks a U S Army Corps icebreaker. a damaged tug and two feet of water in basements compound the danger.

Nolan Files for State Office in May Primary

Elyria businessman James D. Nolan filed petitions for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor submitting 2 060 signatures from 68 counties. He previously ran for secretary of state in 1966. Also seeking the nomination are State Sen Anthony Calabrese and Ray T Miller Jr. Nolan, operator of Elyria East Haven Nursing Home, lives in Cleveland and is active in local Catholic, business, and nursing home groups.

Ohio University students protest fees with brick throwing

About 300 students gathered at the administration building in Athens to protest a fee increase with a brick throwing demonstration. Six arrests were reported as authorities, under an injunction from Judge John Bolin, prepared to move on campus. The protest followed a prior 75-person demonstration and a 45-minute sit-in at OU.

Elderly Elyria Woman Dies After Berea Crash

Mrs. Raymond Shripka, 72, of 710 Bond St., died at Central Baptist Hospital after injuries from a Jan 11 single car crash near Berea. Her husband, 74, was released earlier and living nearby. She suffered a broken arm and pelvis and multiple wounds.

Lorain County shelter plan shows large deficit in protection

A county survey outlines a critical shortage of fallout shelters in Lorain County. The Community Shelter Plan estimates peak population coverage and shelter location gaps, noting 54 percent live where 92 percent of shelters are concentrated, leaving many outside reach. Only two shelter surpluses exist, with one in downtown Lorain at Fifth and Broadway.
