Ohio WPA rolls to shrink under Congress relief cut
In Columbus Ohio on January 30 1939 WPA workers face a possible drop from 245000 to about 175000 by spring as a 150 million dollar cut is allocated. Officials warn it will be a gradual reduction with priority given to larger families and need. WPA payrolls peaked at 286822 last October with 36000 awaiting assignment. Wages average 59.90 monthly with 44 to 94 range. Administration costs run about 2.05 percent of outlay and 1.2 percent for the first five months of the current year. A coordinated state county welfare program is urged to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
