Government data show the Index of Leading Economic Indicators up 1.5 percent in December, the eighth gain in nine months and the sharpest rise in over two years. The coincident index slipped 0.1 percent, suggesting continued recession with slow recovery. Six of ten indicators improved, hinting at a moderate 1983 rebound.
Lorain County Community College Treasurer Donald Arnold projects a 9 percent winter and 3 percent fall enrollment gain boosting revenue by 144 305 and helping the 1982 83 budget reach a modest 80 000 surplus. Without growth utility costs would exceed projections and state aid would fall.

Sheffield Township firefighter and 2021 volunteer Rehoreg suffered major injuries after falling from an aerial ladder while rescuing a cat stranded atop a pole. He was treated at St Joseph Hospital where his blood pressure was perilously low but stabilized. The cat fled after the fall and the owner remains unknown.
