Winter storm paralyzes western New York and beyond

A fierce winter storm halted travel from the Midwest to the Atlantic. Western New York roads were blocked by deep snow, and the New York State Thruway closed from Rochester to the Pennsylvania line. Gusts up to 80 mph battered areas near Buffalo while Ontario highways were shut and thousands of students stranded. Cold air followed, with subzero readings across the Plains and Midwest and wind chills far below zero in Chicago and the Deep South.
