Vermilionites push tax initiative amid dispute over referendum
Supporters of a drive to halt a half percent city tax hike for workers outside Vermilion will file petitions to place the issue on an initiative ballot. Law Director Ed Smolk ruled petitions with more than 900 signatures asking for a referendum invalid since the council set the increase as an emergency measure. Initiative drives remain legal and could allow tax collection until the vote. Leader Jack Jewell says the group already has sufficient signatures and will keep collecting to stay well above the threshold, with possible taxpayers’ suit if the initiative fails.
