Ohio governor decries Midwest blizzard as heavy snowstorms rage

A Midwest blizzard stranded hundreds of motorists and closed major roads while heavy rains and floods hit the East and South. Indiana declared a snow emergency as arctic air moved in. Kentucky closed western highways and eastern sections flooded forcing evacuations. West Virginia saw over 1,000 people flee rising river waters. Indiana National Guard opened 26 armories to deploy emergency crews, with hundreds stranded on highways and rescuers taking hours to reach them. Six inches of fresh snow hit southern Michigan closing schools and businesses as Detroit and Grand Rapids faced freezing, gusty conditions and lake storm warnings.

Ohio declares state of emergency as historic blizzard hits

Gov James A Rhodes announced a state emergency amid the worst blizzard in Ohio history. Winds near 75 mph gusts, heavy snow, and freezing temps halted travel and shut roads in Lorain County. The storm prompted a 10 am briefing as guardsmen could be deployed statewide. By morning snowbound communities faced drifts and widespread disruption.

North Olmsted teachers strike over offers amid blizzard

North Olmsted teachers began a strike after rejecting the board’s last pay offer. Pickets appeared at two schools at 4 30 a.m. with more to come when classes resume, weather delaying talks. Non teaching staff ratified a 10 percent raise effective Jan 1, with hospital costs covered.

Mom and boys escape burning New London home

A mother Mrs Jean Lemons and her two sons Brent 19 and Ty 14 woke to flames on North Maple Street and climbed to a porch roof before jumping to the snow. They were uninjured though the house and neighboring properties were damaged and possessions were lost. Fire Chief Al Walters said the fire was burning through the home when crews arrived and a thaw delayed equipment afterward.

Blizzard shuts Lorain area as outages surge across state

Outages flood in across Lorain and wider area with most of the city without power. Utilities report widespread failures while many businesses and banks close and government offices shut. Snow driven by 70 mph winds reduces visibility and drifts close roads. The National Weather Service warns of more blizzard conditions with several inches of snow and near zero temperatures.
