Roper guided 1936 agenda for harmony at Washington
The Commerce Secretary reshaped the Business Advisory Committee era in Washington by appointing calmer, less publicity minded substitutes and removing members tied to press leaks. The group will avoid controversial New Deal matters and focus on trade development, merchant marine, aviation safety, railroads and related fields, signaling tighter White House cooperation. A broader narrative follows family rifts and political maneuvering around FDR and the Roosevelts, with factions led by Farley and Fletcher aiming to keep the 1936 campaign clean of backroom whispers while addressing pensions and court decisions that affect New Deal policy.
