FirstMerit Bank to close Lorain West Erie branch
Lorain FirstMerit Bank will shut its West Erie Avenue branch March 31 after the bank cited underperformance and a January 9 robbery. City Council member Eddie Edwards warns seniors will lose nearby access, noting nearby branches on Oberlin Avenue Kansas Avenue and Pearl Avenue are distant. Bank spokeswoman Melisa Kinlin says two miles to the nearest offices mitigates hardship and the city’s officials are urged to attend meetings to discuss alternatives. Mayor Craig Foltin says the impact may be limited and a nearby West fire branch remains open.

Taft to propose funding and testing plans for Ohio schools
Gov. Bob Taft will unveil a plan to overhaul how Ohio funds schools and to reform student testing in his State of the State address. He will urge lawmakers to back recommendations, leveraging a court mandate for expanded education spending amid a slowing economy. He may propose using surplus welfare funds to aid heating bills and back aid to LTV Steel to avert bankruptcy and job losses. The plan includes a $50 million OhioRe ads initiative with over 20,000 volunteers. Republicans plan swift bills on funding and testing once Taft speaks.
