Forest City idles 70 at Wellington plant amid auto slowdown

Forest City Technologies has temporarily laid off 70 workers at its Wellington seven-plant complex due to a slowdown in the auto industry. Vice president Gary Thomas said the company, with plants in Illinois Ohio and Michigan, employs about 600 and the cuts affect staff with less than a year on the job. The firm recently opened an 11 000 square foot Detroit plant to boost processing and shipping of parts.

Fugitives Captured as Texas Prison Break Probe Expands

Four of seven convicts who escaped a Texas prison were captured in Colorado after a Christmas Eve police shooting of a officer. A fifth inmate killed himself in a motor home surrounded by authorities near Woodland Park. Two inmates remain at large, with possible sightings in Woodland Park as of Sunday. FBI official Mark Mershon cautioned the case is not over.

Elyria County Auditor fielding 1500 tax bill questions

The Elyria County Auditor reports over 1,500 calls about January property tax bills and expects more before the February 15 deadline. Pauline Clexen sought relief, receiving a $186 deduction and a promise of re appraisal after a jump from 49 000 to 72 000 in assessed value. Stewart explains assessments rely on six years of neighborhood sales and nearby prices, with 10 percent of office visits leading to re appraisals.
