United States government data show the cost of living rose 0.6 percent in December and finished 1978 at 9 percent above 1977, the highest yearly inflation since 1974. Excluding 1974's 12.2 percent spike, 1978 was the fastest rise since 1947 and the highest on record for a peacetime year. The 9 percent rate surpassed 1977's 6.8 percent.
Americans saw a 7 percent income gain from 1976 to 1977 but 6.5 percent inflation wiped out most of it. Median household income rose to 13,570 in 1977 from 12,570 in 1976, yielding an effective buying-power gain of only about 70 dollars. Inflation influenced wage and benefit adjustments and CPI trends dominated year-end figures.
In a nationally televised State of the Union, President Carter says the union is sound at mid term. He urges building a new foundation for prosperity at home and peace abroad, touting existing programs and restraint on federal control. He rejects inflation versus recession myths and seeks verifiable SALT limits.
A levy campaign is organized to secure voter trust and reach as many people as possible for the emergency 7.6 mill Elyria school levy set for March 22. Committee leaders plan targeted outreach amid questions about the levy’s purpose and building closures.
Washington reports that President Carter's State of the Union address drew a cool reception. Sen Paul Tsongas called it dull and forgettable while Sen Daniel Moynihan said it failed to arouse a larger purpose. Rep Bud Shuster labeled it thirty minutes of fluff and Ted Stevens dismissed it as a declaration of intent.
Icy roads worsened by forecast winter storm with two to four inches of snow possible. Elyria area saw few accidents as stalled cars caused traffic issues. Medina City and county schools closed along with several districts and parochial schools. weather expected to turn rain to snow with blowing snow tonight and temperatures dropping to the low 20s.
