Gov Taft outlined a plan to freeze Medicaid reimbursements and trim optional services, prompting nursing home and advocacy groups to warn of worse care for frail and poor residents. He cited a ballooning budget deficit and projected growth in Medicaid costs, with a 9 percent rise in the coming year and a $300 million hit to the state.
Governor Taft in Columbus seeks tax increases and deeper budget cuts to close Ohio’s roughly $720 million deficit. He urges immediate tax hikes on alcohol and cigarettes totaling $160 million, to be followed by broader tax increases on July 1, calls to empty the rainy-day fund, and closures of prisons and centers for the mentally retarded.

Bob Taft proposed cutting another 30 million from state funds to counties cities villages townships and libraries to close a 720 million deficit critics led by Lorain Mayor Craig Foltin condemned the move as outrageous. The plan targets local government funding with a state address due by end of February and follows nearly 75 million in cuts statewide last year.
Elyria Municipal Court Judge George H. Ferguson plans to retire this year. Four candidates are vying for the seat: attorney Christopher Rothgery, school board member Gary Bennett, and prosecutors Michael Szekely and Jay Grunda. About 70 precinct committeemen will vote at the Holiday Inn to narrow the field, followed by a second vote once a candidate is endorsed.

Researchers at the University of Toronto quantified increases in automobile crashes in the 27 Super Bowls studied. The study shows seven more deaths and about 600 additional injuries in the hours after the game, attributed to drinking, fatigue, distraction, and disappointment among fans, especially in the losing team’s area.
