Prime Minister Edward Heath led Britain in Brussels at Egmont Palace as the EEC began in 1958 with aims of tariff reduction and free movement of goods and services.

Seven Die as Fire Ravages Manila Airport Terminal

Fire swept through the four story Manila International Airport terminal carving a path of destruction. Arson suspected after the blaze began around 3 30 am near the Qantas office. Seven people were killed and nineteen injured with more missing. Property damage exceeds 30 million dollars as control tower and international airline offices were destroyed. Dozens fled as workers navigated smoke filled corridors and some leapt to safety from upper floors. Firefighters rescued twenty people from the roof using aerial ladders.

Explosion hits rail yards in East St Louis

An explosion and fire at the Alton and Southern Railway yards in East St Louis injured several rail workers and residents. The blast damaged boxcars and windows in a 10 block area, with looting reported nearby. The Red Cross sent 30 pints of blood to a hospital as injuries were treated at two area hospitals.

Attack on Hue ceremony leaves ten dead in South Vietnam

Ten civilians died and four were wounded when two suspected Viet Cong terrorists attacked a religious ceremony near Hue. The Pho Ninh hamlet chief and deputy were among the dead. Vietnamese and Korean forces reported multiple enemy fatalities in related clashes along the central coast.

Keys works on day off to mail 110000 tax bills

Lorain County Treasurer J. Grant Keys, off duty, ordered a special mail pickup and 110000 real estate and special assessment tax bills were mailed. First half taxes due by Feb 23, with an anticipated $18.3 million collection. bills were mailed to individuals, businesses, banks, utilities, mortgage firms, veterans groups, and government offices.
