Nixon speech splits parties as election year begins

The State of the Union address drew sharp Democratic and Republican reactions. Senator Lloyd Bentsen charged Nixon made empty 1968 promises about crime and presidential control. Muskie and Humphrey criticized the speech as confrontational, while lawmakers debated defense spending and new tax ideas to fund education.

Chutist hijacker identified faces air piracy charges

FBI identified Richard Charles LaPoint 23 of Seabrook New Hampshire as the Las Vegas hijacker who claimed a bomb ransom of 50000 dollars and parachuted over Colorado plains. He was brought to Denver for a federal air piracy hearing as U S marshals prepared to custody him at Logan County Hospital Sterling.

Inflation at four year low despite December rise

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports December living costs rose four tenths of 1 percent, led by a 1.1 percent food price jump and a 56 percent surge in fresh fruits and vegetables. For 1971 as a whole, the cost of living rose 3.4 percent, the lowest since 1967. The Commerce Department notes fourth quarter GDP growth at 6.0 percent, yet full year growth at 2.7 percent, leaving unemployment concerns unresolved.

Weather outlook with milder temps and scattered showers

Partial clearing this afternoon with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Partly cloudy tonight with lows in the low to mid 30s. Warmer tomorrow with a chance of showers and highs in the low to mid 50s. Precipitation chances 30 percent today, 10 percent tonight, 40 percent tomorrow. Northeasterly winds 10 to 20 mph today, shifting east to southeast 15 to 22 mph tonight. High yesterday at 1 pm was 48 degrees and today’s low at 1 am was 31 degrees.

State plan urged to end transit crisis in Ohio

Gov. Gilligan's Transportation Advisory Committee urged a statewide plan to tailor transit to each community. A new state department of transportation was proposed to oversee highway, mass transit, rail, air traffic and ports, funded by unspecified revenues. The panel warned local agencies must not be usurped and urged safety program consolidations.

Three with prior gambling convictions named in Lorain probe

A Lorain County Grand Jury gambling inquiry lists three of 36 witnesses with prior gambling convictions and notes a fourth suspect charged with possession of numbers slips awaiting March court. The probe targets attempts by gamblers to infiltrate the local police and involves Letco Toyota officials and Oberlin police officers. The U S Justice Department unit led by Robert D Gary also investigates Lorain County gambling.

Ohio Council bans commercial walleyes on Lake Erie

The Ohio Wildlife Council bans commercial catching of walleyes for five years on Lake Erie and its tributaries but allows continued commercial taking of white bass in the 9 to 10 inch range with a 10 percent undersized margin. Mercury content above 10 percent inches and under nine inches render white bass commercially unviable.
