Salvage operations into the seventh day struggle to recover 18 missing bodies from Air Florida Flight 90, with divers searching the Potomac River after the plane clipped the 14th Street Bridge and sank in a snowstorm. Investigators note a nose-high attitude on takeoff and possible improper de icing as a cause. Autopsies will examine pilot and co pilot conditions. Black boxes remain elusive though signals persist from the river bottom.
Gina Pera, 25, an associate editor from Knoxville, fought Valley Fidelity Bank and Kroger after a $17.61 bounced check led to her jailing. A Knox County jury on Monday ordered the bank to pay $50,000, though she doubts she will ever collect. Her lawyer said the case shows the injustice of the 12 court costs demand.
Zeeland Community Hospital officials deny responsibility for the death of 3 year old Stephanie Lynn Shuck who was crushed by a mechanical bed in a semi private room. The internal safety report says the death came from an empty bed and notes no evidence of improper staff action. Unassigned beds will be unplugged and lowered to avoid recurrence while agencies may offer recommendations. The parents declined comment on the report.
