Tax bill delay hurts Lorain schools and districts
Lorain County faces higher costs as real estate tax bills are delayed to Feb 24 under a new House Bill 50 reform. Delays push school tax settlements later, forcing some districts to borrow from banks or the state to meet payrolls, raising interest costs. Local treasurers and auditors cite late state tax rate certifications and shifting residential to commercial tax burdens as factors. Avon Lake homeowners face the per district savings estimates of 4-5 percent, about $25 yearly on a $50,000 home, though actual impact varies by district.
