New 1967 tax rules differ on medical, dependents, education
Changes in 1967 tax rules affect medical expense deductibility for all, dependency exemptions for divorced parents, and education expense deductions for teachers. The 3 percent gross income limit now applies to all, with no dollar cap on medical expenses and half of the first 300 dollars for medical insurance deductible. Dependency rules shift custody-based exemptions unless a written agreement or court order says otherwise. Education deductions now cover costs for teachers seeking a new specialty or degree if related to current job requirements, not for a new occupation.
