TRW unit settles massive toxic waste dumping case
TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc, a TRW Inc subsidiary, agreed to pay nearly 25 million dollars to resolve criminal charges for illegally storing and dumping sodium azide waste from air bag propellant. Arizona officials say total remediation could reach 60 million. The plea covers 15 felonies with 12 million in fines, plus 5.67 million in civil penalties and 1.6 million for landfill cleanup, plus 12 million to fix storage and sump problems at the Mesa plants. The case prompted required newspaper apologies and cited prior fires, injuries, and a 1994 fatality at the Mesa facility.
